My first goal with followers thru twitter was 1000 persons and that goal I reached, then after a while I set my goal to 2000 followers. On twitters own help center it says ”Every account can follow 2,000 users total. Once you’ve followed 2,000 users, there are limits to the number of additional users you can follow. This number is different for each account and is based on your ratio of followers to following; this ratio is not published. Follow limits cannot be lifted by Twitter and everyone is subject to follow limits, even high profile and API accounts.”
So around 2000 followers then it starting to get a little bit tricky, read somewhere that you can follow about 10 percent of your followernumber then twitter will not let you add more followers.
My approach to this is to follow as many as I can that seems interesting and would think that my twitter could be useful and after a day or so I use a twitter unfollow application to get rid of all non followers, then I start all over again.
But I have also noticed when I have approx 2500 followers that there are a lot that follow me without me asking them first and that is good.
But I follow all that follow me and I unfollow all that unfollow me.
I use a free app that called Unfollow by Spicy apps for the iPhone/iPad, it takes some time for it to unfollow but it works fine, it also have a mode for unfollow twitter accounts that haven´t tweeted for a period that you set.
The persons that have hundreds of thousands of followers I think they use some other service that automates the process all together, my way you have to put in some work to it.
